Fashion is brutal. It teams up with the weather and makes everyone aware of its presence. Even if one has no fashion sense, the weather pushes them to wear clothes according to the season which ultimately makes them look a part of the group they’re socializing in rather than a fish out of water just for wearing the wrong fabric clothes in the wrong season. Some parts of a country get to experience all seasons equally, others are mostly cold while the rest are usually hot and sometimes give the feel of winter that even for a limited period.
Women and men tend to wear clothes according to seasons basically, the embroidery, colors, cuts and everything else comes afterward. Being a coastal city with mild temperatures throughout the year, Karachi experiences the seasons in subtle way. Women from Karachi don’t care much about winter clothes though especially the ones who aren’t peculiar about their ‘winter/summer look’. They usually keep wearing lawn or linen but wear a sweater or pashmina shawl over to keep themselves warm. Usually you’d see sparse advertisements for Bonanza’s  latest range of winter clothes. While they are trendy in their own right, sweaters and cardigans aren’t as appealing as shawls. I personally believe that a good shawl is a good fashion ornament for both men and women. Women can wear it in plain, dark colors according to the dress they’re wearing or carry a slightly embroidered one over a plain cotton salwar kameez.
Teenagers use a lot of pashmina shawls these days by accessorizing it with jeans and top or a pashmina  stole around their neck, in different styles and knots. Men have been using it too, not only will you get to see your guard wearing one at night to prevent himself from cold air and mosquitoes but nowadays men wear it over shalwar kameez in winters or at mehndi ceremonies. Some wear pashmina scarves with suiting which gives a very elegant and stylish look. Pashmina shawls are in a class of their own. Made  from the fur of mountain goats in the Himalayas, the wool is quite remarkable in retaining heat while having no apparent bulk whatsoever.
Usually a pure 100% wool shawl lacks the drape and sheen of a pashmina shawl, hence most pashmina shawls produced have a 70-30 blend ratio with silk though 50-50 blends are rare and offer less heat retention. With its ability to retain color and offer absolutely negligible shrinkage, pashmina shawls have become an internationally recognized article of clothing. Ex-Pats swear on the effectiveness of Pashmina shawls are being on par with the bulkiest of sweaters available, but beat the sweaters into oblivion by being brightly colored and trendy. Current US Trade guidelines refuse to recognize the word pashmina as a brand or a proper labeling term, which causes problems with retailers of as the public perception is lost, kind of like when you call an iPhone, “an expensive touch-screen phone”.
What is the point of spending a pile of cash on clothes if you are going to sit home and wait for your husband to come home? Women need platforms to show off their dresses, shoes, bags and other accessories not only to their relatives and friends but also to the strangers they come across in public. This isn’t about showing off your wealth, but your tastes in fashion. Mind you that not everyone has the same platform available.
Like young girls have school parties, proms, family dinners, friends hangout and malls available to display their style in clothes, whereas adults have universities, formal dinners with friends and families, shopping malls, offices and schools where they represent their kids to flaunt their expensive, up-to-date, stylish clothes and accessories. Being fashionable has its own charm; it boosts confidence and creates a persona of authority amongst your peers. Go to a mall anytime during the day and it’ll feel like you’re  watching a fashion show and the shoppers appear to be walking on the ramp, dressed so perfectly, doing the cat-walk. Go to pick your kids from school and you’ll see the teachers dressed in the latest shalwar kameez or tunic kurta with jeans or tights or their mothers in latest Maria.B, Khaadi or Generations latest shalwar kameez  designs in pastel shades usually, keeping in mind the time of the day they’re stepping out in to pick their kids. You’ll find them rarely in high heels; usually they’re seen in semi-formal flat shoes or mid-heels.
Now you would think what is the point of wearing a stunning outfit if you are just a teacher or a business professional, after all these jobs require your skills rather than your looks. While the skills of an individual are important, the way you dress, and display yourself in front of people takes equal precedence. No matter how skilled you are, if your dressing is shabby, your colors are uncoordinated, your peers and superiors won’t take you seriously. On the other hand if you have an impeccable sense of dressing, you’ll realize how seriously you will be taken, the respect people will bestow unto you. There is a reason why every fresh graduate is taught the importance of dressing to impress.
However, everything should be within limits. That is to say while most  fashion gurus would tell you that tent-like gowns are in fashion (also known as poncho style shirts), common sense dictates that these cumbersome outfits be kept away from kitchens and little kids and jobs where mobility is key (like working in a tight office space.) Another thing women should be mindful of is to dress for the job you want, and for the job you have. A balance is needed here to ensure that your superiors recognize you as a potential heir to their throne, but not as a challenger. Other than that, it all comes down to how great your dress sense is.
